Pepper Spray Use
OC is oleoresin capsicum is extracted from chili peppers. This product is the choice of police since 1977. Pepper spray must be sprayed directly in the eyes or inhaled for maximum effectiveness. I would like to share a story that changed my way of thinking about self defense. I travel through some rough looking neighborhoods. I sometimes feel pretty vulnerable. This led me to buy Michigan pepper spray as a non-lethal form of self defense. I had no reason to think I would ever use it but thought it would give a sense of security. However, I did have the unfortunate opportunity to use pepper spray one time and it left the attacker lying on the ground in pain.

I was attending a conference in an unfamiliar town that was a suburb of Detroit. It was near the downtown area and only
about 4 blocks from my hotel. There was a small park with a pedestrian walkway to the street where several restaurants resided. The walkway was well lit, and a small short cut to the street I wanted to go. This area did not look threatening in any way and had lots of traffic on the street where I was headed. I continued through the park to the downtown area and found a good place for dinner.

I headed back to my hotel around 10pm that night. As I started back through the park walkway I placed my pepper spray in my right hand. I really did not believe that I needed to be prepared for a confrontation but thought I would be prepared since I was in an unfamiliar area. Just as I started across a walkway that led to the main sidewalk, a man jumped me from behind with one arm. In a low voice I heard "give me your wallet". I gave him a shot of pepper spray right in the face. My attacker immediately fell to the ground on his hands and knees screaming. It obviously was a good shot. I gave him one more shot of pepper spray directly into the face and double timed myself right up on the main sidewalk and never looked back. I do not know what happened to this person after that night and don't really care. I was safe and my wallet was still with me. There where no police around when the incident happened and the pepper spray was all I needed to defend myself.

Most of the time when people think of personal protection or self defense they think of karate or judo which takes a great deal of time for training. Although this type of self defense is effective my experience with the use of pepper spray is proof that extensive training is not necessary to give you the personal security that you may need.
